Why Google Instant sucks

As big a Google fan as I am, I can't *stand* Google Instant. If I could express the degree to which I can't stand it, I would (but I can't). On a scale of 1 to 10 though -- 1 being "passionately in love" and 10 being... whatever "the opposite of passionately in love" is -- I'd probably give it a literal googol. Great idea, but it sucks.

Google Instant: you're annoying.

  • I don't want my entire set of search results to change with each key press.
  • I don't want the entire page to refresh with each key press.
    • In fact, the only thing I really like about the suggestions they give (and suggestions are not the same as Google Instant) is when I use them as a spell-check tool (but that's a different story).
  • Hitting the "enter" key is really not that hard.

I can't even imagine how much bandwidth Google Instant uses.

... And since that information is probably "privileged" or something, I ran a little test myself (not much, but it's better than nothing... kinda... OH and FYI you'll probably have to hit the "full screen" button in order to be able to see anything):

Get the Flash Player to see this video.

Maybe it doesn't look like much, but multiply the bytes downloaded times the number of searches you do in a day times the number of people who use Google (millions), and those numbers can add up pretty quick.

So, as I've asked before, PLEASE GET RID OF GOOGLE INSTANT.

It's all good

Hey, thanks for visiting my neglected corner of the web. I agree, Google needs to take its collective head out of its collective rear -- they've forgotten why people abandoned the 'leaders' and switched to the upstart Google a decade ago. Now Google seems to be trying to win the bloat and rampant featuritis wars.

Feh. I'm looking for a new search provider. http://duckduckgo.com/ is kinda fun. I use Bing wherever possible (for other reasons, including privacy issues -- Google knows way too much, and I'm not going to help them any more than I must.)(oh, and FYI, if I have JavaScript disabled -- which I do by default, I use NoScript to block JavaScript from unapproved sites -- no CAPTCHA appears here but I get a message saying I failed to fill in the CAPTCHA form... kinda confusing.  Also, I replied to your comment about CAPTCHA / Mollom issues over on my site...)Cheers!Mike
